Disabling the openoffice splash screen in ubuntu
For a while I was annoyed by the openoffice splash screen, as it always showed on top of the pesky “macro-dialog”. Thus stopping the whole loading process without me noticing it. So if you would like to disable the startup logo, do the following:
Go edit the “sofficerc”-file
sudo gedit /etc/openoffice/sofficerc
Change the variable Logo to 0 (put 1 again there if you want to re-enable it)
[Bootstrap]
Logo=0
“Et voila”, no startup logo (splash screen) anymore…

FernandoSplash screens serve a purpose: to indicate the user that his “click” or “double click” has worked and that SOMETHING IS GOING ON during the course of a long operation (like program load) so on slower systems the user does not continue clicking or double clicking thinking that “nothing happened” and thus launching several copies of the same application.
I haven’t seen the “hang” that you refer to, but I’m very against the idea of this “anti-splash-screen” meme which is spread by a lot of users obviously with little clue of what the purpose of the splash screen is.
Try the same program on a slow system and you’ll understand why there’s a splash screen.
Once upon a time, there was a long discussion in the mozilla’s bugzila against the splash screen.
I’m glad to see the splash screen is back in SeaMonkey… even if the program loads lighting fast… it doesn’t matter, it serves a purpose.

KarimThe post is to show people on how to disable it if it’s annoying to them… I found myself (several times) in a situation where it wasn’t ideal to have the splash screen. And even for other applications, I don’t like splash screens, as they are “pushy” in placing them “on-top” of the other windows. So on “low-end” systems, this should also be annoying, as other content is blocked while this application is loaded?

FernandoHi,
Thanks for your response and visiting my blog (and the help with Terminal -> reset)
I now understand why you said what you said… I thought you were advocating for the elimination of splash screens altogether. I agree that if power users want, they should be disabled.
But once again, I think they serve a useful purpose frmo a “user feedback” and visual / user interface design perspective, specially for newbies who tend to get impatient and click click click expecting some sort of inmediate visual clue of “what’s going on”. The Splash screen thus serves as deterrent in those situations.
Best regards,
FC
I don't mind splash screens that much. I mind
Alan De SmetI don’t mind splash screens that much. I mind that the fscking OOo splash screen demands that it be on top of every other window, making it hard to get work done while it starts up. You can inform me that you’re loading without taking over my screen. Even better than Logo=0 would be Logo=Behave-like-a-normal-window. It would pop up, I’d click back to my email and it would go behind my email like a well behaved program.

Chris TuckerAgreed. The OpenOffice splash screen is especially annoying. In fact on a slower system it is even more annoying because it dominates the desktop for longer. Yep, sometimes I’m impatient and end up getting two windows of firefox but that just teaches me to pay attention when I click to be sure that I click and then relax (or more often do something else like check an email in thunderbird) while I wait for it to load. Can’t wait to get rid of OO’s.
On the plus side it’s convinced me to do almost all of my writing, etc. in gedit!
thanks work great.

mehboobThanks for the tip, i don’t see what the whining is about, since it’s just as simple to turn it on again. However, when tweaking openoffice to open more quickly i found that disabling the splash screen actually slowed down the process just a little bit. That’s been my observation, wonder if anybody else noticed that.
Fernando - Idiot. Don't you read ANYTHING = the splash
Jahm MittFernando – Idiot. Don’t you read ANYTHING = the splash screen GETS IN MY WAY, while I am doing other things, while OO is opening.
OK so my system is sometimes quite slow and the rest of the time it’s OK…
But when it is slow and that fucking splash screen is jammed front and center of my screen, and I don’t want it, I don’t need it and I can’t switch this fucking idiot function off…
Anyway – what pisses me off just as badly is self obsessed idiots who think that other people getting pissed off with this built in stupidity, somehow justifies people like you giving them a lecture in how to enjoy shit getting shoved in their faces; and why they need it…….
Like “Fuck off idiot”.
Its great work.Thanks a lot.
